Earth Day 2000 Information

This year's celebration, which marks the 30th anniversary of Earth Day, will be the largest environmental event in human history, reaching half a billion people in over 160 countries. Here in Sonoma County, we anticipate 5,000 to 10,000 participants at the April 22 Earth Day Festival, and thousands more at dozens of smaller events and activities throughout the county.

The Festival will take place Saturday, April 22, from 10 am to 6 pm, in Courthouse Square and on Fourth and B Streets, in downtown Santa Rosa. Additional downtown venues include the Main Library, Santa Rosa Plaza, City Council Chambers, and possibly a nearby theatre or art gallery. The Festival will include music, dance and spoken word performances, talks, films and videos, exhibits, demonstrations, and much more. The Festival will include informational booths for non-profits and public agencies, as well as vendor booths for businesses offering environmentally friendly products and services.

Dozens of smaller Earth Day-related events will take place throughout Sonoma County during the month of April, including tours, restoration projects, mini-fairs, lectures, religious services, performances, and more.

The theme of our event is building a healthy and sustainable Sonoma County for the next century. Because a sustainable and ecologically sound business community is an essential foundation, many of our presentations, and exhibits will focus on environmental successes by local businesses, and on opportunities for business leadership in "greening" the larger community.

For information on event sponsorship, booth availability, and other types of involvement, contact event coordinator Daniel Solnit at 887-8987, or the Earth Day Steering Committee at 578-0595.
