Southern Access to Headwaters Forest Announced

By Diane Beck, North Group Conservation Co-Chair

The Bureau of Land Management is allowing limited public access to the southern part of Headwaters Forest Reserve, beginning May 15, 2000. A BLM backcountry ranger will lead four-mile hikes, four days a week. Hikes will be limited to 20 to 30 participants. Hikers will be able to reserve a day by calling the BLM office in Arcata, which will begin taking reservations on May 1. School groups may sign up for the ranger-led hikes two days a week. Hikers will be required to keep to the trail, which follows an old logging road along Salmon Creek, adjacent to the old-growth redwoods. BLM is trying diligently to provide limited public access without impacting the integrity of old-growth ecosystem values.

This limited southern access (from Salmon Pass only, with parking for a maximum of 10 vehicles) is an interim measure, while the long-term management plan is being developed, which will take up to another two years. The planning process is open to anyone interested in Headwaters. For additional information on trails, guided hikes, and the planning process, call BLM's Arcata Field Office, 707/825-2300, or write 1695 Heindon Road, Arcata, CA 95521.
