Clair Tappaan Lodge Has a Renaissance Wally Juchert | |

"Taking Action" in the Sierra Club usually entails writing a letter, going to a meeting, and writing a check. For this cause, however, you have another option--treat yourself to two nights at Clair Tappaan Lodge near Lake Tahoe. Since it was built by volunteers in the 1930s, Clair Tappaan Lodge has welcomed Club members and nonmembers to a warm, affordable retreat in the mountains. Its unconventional hospitality, friendly, hostel-like atmosphere, and mix of activities for all ages take visitors back to a time of popcorn, fireplaces, sledding, hot chocolate, and the companionship of fellow guests. The Club owns the Lodge, 50 acres of forest, a secondary Lodge, a warming hut, and four backcountry ski huts in the Donner Summit area. Over the last few years, the Lodge has operated at a loss due to low occupancy and the Club has been forced to subsidize its operation. Now this is changing. In the last two years, the Club has hired a management firm and has invested $250,000 in improvements including remodeled bathrooms, better lighting, a better heating system, new furniture and a fire suppression system. The Club and the Clair Tappaan Executive Committee need your help to make this investment pay off. |
The bad news is that the Club will no longer subsidize this precious asset, and may be required to sell it. Please help us raise $100,000 in donations to help offset this year's anticipated losses. If you can help, please write a check to:
