Mendocino Group Report

Linda Perkins
Mendocino Group Chair

Meeting Dates and Places

The Mendocino Group usually meets at the conference room of the Mendocino Hotel on Albion Street in Mendocino Village on the 2nd Thursday of the even numbered months at 6PM. However, in April the location will change. The meeting will be held in Albion at the new Albion school, 3 miles up Albion Ridge Road, still 2nd Thursday, still 6PM. If there is a desire for a meeting to be held at another location in the county, with some advance notice we will be glad to accommodate. Please call Mary Walsh at 937-0572, or Linda Perkins at 937-0903 to make arrangements.

Notes from our February Meeting plus - Save the Date, May 6!

  • We heard an update on the progress of a grading ordinance review from Daniel Myers. The Mendocino Group recognizes the importance of a Grading Ordinance and is working on strategies to achieve that. For background, contact our group and/or go to the Mendocino County website at http://www.co.mendocino.ca.us/planning/index.html.
  • The Group agreed to sponsor presentations on the Endangered Species Act one of which was held in Fort Bragg on March 7, the other held March 8 in Gualala.
  • The Group agreed to grant funds to Pacific Environmental Education Center in support of a program to bus schoolchildren to MacKerricher State Park for environmental experiential education.
  • The Group heard a presentation from coastal activist Judith Vidaver on a proposed facility for trail rides and horse stable project on the west side of Hwy 1 at the Vista Point just south of Westport.
  • The Group heard a report from Linda Perkins on Big River and Albion River groups' lawsuit against State Parks for allowing logging roads through Big River State Park; suit now in Appellate Court.
  • Mary Walsh has been working in association with North Coast Action on the Georgia Pacific Mill Site Reuse Project and spoke at a recent Fort Bragg City Council meeting concerning the Polanco Act. The Sierra Club does not support this Act because it grants broad immunities to polluters.
  • Finally, we have made arrangements to have Mark Massara come to Fort Bragg Town Hall on May 6 with his Great Coastal Places Campaign. In conjunction with North Coast Action, the CA Native Plant Society, Dorothy King Young Chapter, and under the auspices of The Alliance for Democracy, the Mendocino Group will present Mark Massara who has said, "From my perspective, nothing in California is bigger than the G-P Mill reuse efforts, and there is probably lots of stuff we could do to insure that we get the best possible access and protection and restoration of that property."
