Pebble Beach Development Could Threaten Ability to Protect Redwood Chapter Coastline | |
|
More than 200 Sierra Club members and our allies attended the Coastal Commission hearing in March to help protect 17,000 threatened Monterey pine trees from being cut down for yet another golf course in Pebble Beach. The thirteen hour long hearing was dedicated to a massive development proposal which could affect more than just the central coast, but California's entire threatened coastline. Sierra Club has led the way to defeat this development proposal which would require a new golf course, driving range, equestrian center, mansions and resort development and the destruction of what Coastal Commission staff has identified as Environmentally Sensitive Habitat Area or ESHA. The project would also require development on land that had been previously set aside for "permanent" protection through conservation easements. If allowed by the Commission, the precedent set could have dire consequences for future conservation in coastal communities from San Diego to Eureka. |
The hearing ended without a vote by the Commission, but final decisions are anticipated by June, so there is still time to help. Both Sonoma County Supervisor Mike Reilly and Humboldt County Supervisor Bonnie Neely sit on the Coastal Commission and their votes are essential to stopping this precedent setting proposal. If you live in either county, you can help protect our coast by asking your Supervisor to stand up to the considerable pressure expected from these high-profile developers. With their help we can save the largest remaining natural coastal forest of threatened Monterey pine trees and preserve our ability to protect all of California's great coastal places.
