REDWOOD NEEDLES
The Napa Group has been very active in an effort to oppose a gigantic development just south of the city of Napa. A Texas development group called "Richland Interests" has put two measures on the March 26 election ballot to circumvent our local protections for open space and agricultural land. The measures W and X would allow Richland to build a "new city" the size of St. Helena on 1,173 acres of rolling hills and grazing land.
On February 25, we co-sponsored a Silent Auction/ Wine Tasting held by "Citizens Against Suscol Creek Development." This event was very successful in raising money to help defeat these measures. However, Richland Interests is currently spending massive amounts of money on advertising to influence the voters in Napa. A 1996 Primary Environmental Voter Guide was mailed to our membership with our endorsements: for Napa County Board of Supervisors, Kathryn Winter for District 4 & Mike Rippey for District 5; opposition to Measures W & X; as well as the State level endorsements of Valerie Brown for Assembly District 7; opposition to Propositions 192, 197, 201 & 202; and Monica Marvin for Congressional District 1.
Chris Sauer, a new ExCom member, is representing the Napa County Sierra Club on the Community Coalition for a Napa River Flood Management Plan. We hope to make the plan more sensitive to the environment and to preserve and enhance the entire Napa River Watershed.
Our annual Earth Day Napa River Clean-up is scheduled for April
20. The new executive committee held their annual planning retreat on
March 10. Our number one goal for the next 12 months is to reconnect
with the general membership and increase member involvement in the
Napa Group's activities. Our next membership meeting in May will
focus on the Napa River.
