News from the North

Headwaters
The Headwaters Deal was completed at the last possible hour. The small size of the old growth groves reserved does have some concerned that they may be vulnerable to harm. Based on our past dealings with BLM, who will be in control of the preservation of the reserves, we are confident that what-ever preservation can be done within the limits of the agreement will be done. We'll be watching this very closely. Some of the area is open to the public. Con-tact one of us if you plan to come north and we'll help you access the groves.

A very special member
We've been celebrating the 80th birthday of one of the most active Sierra Club members on the North Coast. Lucille Vinyard hit that magic date on December 17, 1998 and has been receiving national recognition of her ardent advocacy for preservation of the Redwoods. Lucille continues to serve on the ExCom of the local group and remains connected to commissions and advocacy groups. Those of us who have had the pleasure of working with Lucille on a regular basis are continually impressed with her wealth of knowledge about this part of the world as well as her knowledge about the various government, agency and private players on the environmental scene here on the North Coast. She is truly a great woman-we are all very fortunate to have her working with us.

Driving us buggy
The Buggy Club, a private group of OHV riders, is asking the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors to change the County's Beach and Dunes Management Plan to expand the area for OHV's. Interestingly, they want to ride on land they purchased after the Plan was developed and have been riding illegally on that property for the past five years. The county has levied fines agaist their activity but the Buggy Club is ignoring these. Local Sierra Club members plan to address the Board of Supervisors to ensure that this is not allowed to happen.
