Wildlands 2000 Update

Hosted by Ryan Hansen from the California Wilderness Coalition (CWC), the Sonoma Group sponsored a slideshow and presentation on Wildlands 2000 at its February 25th general meeting. The following Sunday provided twenty committed volunteers (in the rain!) with field-check survey training and the opportunity to practice firsthand at Bureau of Land Management's Cow Mountain Recreation Area near Ukiah.

Wildlands 2000 is a campaign to protect many of California's remaining wildlands as legally designated wilderness, and the purpose of field-checking is to ensure that significant human incursions such as clearcutting, roadbuilding, mining, and off-road vehicle use have not occurred within the proposed areas that would disqualify them for wilderness consideration.

If you are interested in learning more about Wildlands 2000 or field-check survey training, contact Ryan Hansen at (530)758-0380, or e-mail him at ryan@calwild.org.

A special "thank you" to all our volunteers who braved the cold, wet, windy weather to learn and participate in field-checking, and to Margaret Pennington who coordinated the carpooling effort from Santa Rosa.

--Linda Price, Sonoma Group Membership Chair
