I would like to thank Susan Petersen for all her hard work these past years as the North Group Outings Chair. Susan has sent in her formal resignation. I will miss her as the spark of the north. SO we need a new North Group Outings Chair. I am sure someone would be willing to do this job. Please let me know. Also Mendo-Lake and Solano are missing a coordinator. The job is fun and not difficult.
The Redwood Chapter maintains Benson Hut located on the Sierra Crest. It is between Sugar Bowl and Squaw Valley. I am currently the interim work party coordinator. However, I am not a carpenter or a person who possesses a great deal of skill in any of the needed areas. Ken Thatcher held this position for many years. He was experienced. So I am asking for a volunteer or a committee to oversee the hut. Please give it some thought. This is a chance to contribute to the history of our organization. There is a master hut coordinator for all the huts. He is Dick Simpson. He helps with all 4 of the huts and will answer any questions.
Winter leaders are needed to help lead snowshoe backpack trips to all four of the huts. We asked last year and no one came forward. We have a large membership. There must be someone who can volunteer some time. Call 546-6308 to volunteer. We always have members who want to go on these trips. The ideal time to see the huts is in the summer so you know the trail in. We have a core of backpackers who are loyal to our huts. So please help out. We can't do everything!
I will have a training session for new leaders in the fall. We are also having a backpack section meeting soon since many of you asked. See the Outings page.
The Sonoma County Outdoor Recreation Master Plan is starting to crawl forward once again. A Citizen's Advisory Committee meeting was held on July 13. A schedule of public meetings should soon be out. We hope to dedicate the Final Plan to the late Julie Fisher who was our first CORE committee chair.
The Sonoma County Ag Preservation and Open Space District has held public meetings on the Draft Acquisition Plan 2000. These are very important meetings and I hope you have been keeping up with the plan.
Have a great summer.
