Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Update

Rep. George Miller (with Rep. Anna Eshoo) has introduced a bill into the House of Representatives, calling for an increase in CAFE standards to 40 mpg. Rep Miller lists the following five good reasons to support his billSierra Club heartily agrees:

1. Higher CAFE standards keep America from relying on foreign sources of oil.

2. Higher CAFE standards protect our air.

3. Fuel efficiency standards were easily raised 25 years ago, but have not changed since.

4. Higher CAFE standards can be achieved using existing technology.

5. Higher CAFE standards can be achieved without sacrificing safety.
