Redwood Needles August 2001

From the Outings Chair

By Carol Vellutini, Chapter Outings Chair

Eager to start an outings program, the new Lake County Group had an outing leaders training session on June 10th. Attending the session were Steve Devoto, Nina Marino, Giff Troyer, Barney Nicholas, Chuck Sturges, Olan Lewis and Pete McGee. Not present were Ryan Henderson and Peter Windron. They represented a diverse background of interests including a backcountry horseman, a former leader of base camps, a National leader, a retired school teacher, and a high school principal. Their interests included water sports, bicycling, skiing, backpacking, and hiking.

The Sierra Club participated in California Trail Days and National Trail Days. We are always looking for more volunteers who like doing trail work. Our Nattkemper Trail is looking good. So many people appreciate the trail because it is one of the area's best hiking trails. I have suggested that a bench dedicated to our Clark Nattkemper would look great along the trail. We will pursue this thought and might ask for donations. Anyone handy at building benches?

By the time you receive your newsletter the new roof should be on Benson Hut. For those of you who have never been up there, it is hard to convey to you how wonderful it is to have people volunteer for work parties. Thanks to all who are helping.

Thanks to Bill for organizing the Santa Rosa Creek Clean-up. We almost filled a 20-yard bin with trash. More people than ever are living by the creek. The homeless need a permanent shelter. I participated in the march to the Board of Supervisors to ask for their help. I also spoke to the Santa Rosa City Council. The health of our streams is important for the future of coho salmon. With the amount of garbage being left there, it will take volunteer effort to keep it clean.

Please participate in your area on Sept 15 in the annual Beach Clean-up. Each group has an event.

The Sonoma Group suffered another loss with the death of Moira Chatton. I could always count on her expert advice and professional demeanor. Land Use and Outings sometimes work hand in hand on projects. I will miss her abiding spirit.
