Lake Group Report

By Nina Marino, Lake Group Chair

The newly formed Lake Group (Lake County) is off to a good start. Our first meeting brought nearly 50 people from all around the county who were thrilled that we will finally have a local Sierra Club. We have great outings leaders who have already organized several hikes (to Snow Mountain, Perkins Ridge, Table Rock by the pinnacles near Calistoga), and we're looking forward to a Cache Creek rafting trip as well as a bike ride over the old toll road over to Hopland - final destination will be the brewery.

We discussed several areas of possible focus in terms of conservation issues and our temporary executive committee will be recommending that one of our first projects be to support the expansion of several Wilderness Areas (Cache Creek, Snow Mountain, Mount Sanhedrin and Yuki, near Lake Pillsbury in northern Lake County). We spoke at a recent county supervisors' meeting on the importance of promoting responsible and thoughtful vineyard development which is good for both Lake County's economy as well as the environment.

Our second meeting hosted a slide show on the Cache Creek Wilderness Area, to be followed in the fall by a multi-media slide show on the flora and fauna of Death Valley by two of our members who are professional photographers. Our summer meeting will be held at Lakeside County Park on Wednesday, July 25th at 6 pm, where we'll socialize and have a short formal meeting to discuss conservation issues and get an outings update. Bring your own picnic and a dessert to share.

We are looking forward to being an official, accredited group, just as soon as we get someone to work on writing our by-laws which, as the Sierra Club New Group Handbook so eloquently states, is about as popular as having a root canal. Many thanks to Margaret Pennington and others in the chapter for their assistance in helping us work out the many details of new group formation.
