REDWOOD NEEDLESPresented by the Sierra Club Redwood Chapter Newsletter, The REDWOOD NEEDLES
The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors and the City of Windsor have proclaimed Saturday September 22 as Russian River Watershed Cleanup Day. The 2001 Russian River Watershed Cleanup (RRWC) is a project of the Sonoma County Conservation Council and is in association with Trowbridge Canoe Trips, Burke's Canoes, PG&E, Sequoia Paddling Club, State Coastal Conservancy, Sonoma County Public Works - Refuse Disposal, Empire Waste Management, Sonoma County Water Agency, Sunrise Garbage Services, West Sonoma County Disposal Service, Guerneville Graphics and Printing, Sprint Copy Center-Sebastopol and other businesses and individuals. (Russian River Unlimited cleans the river north of Cloverdale.)
Volunteers are needed to help with the planning and organization of this two day event. Community members will clean up the river between Asti and the ocean by canoe and by foot on Saturday. Collected trash is sorted for recycling on Sunday. We need different groups who will adopt a beach along the river and be responsible or cleaning up that area.
Organizational meetings are scheduled for August 20 and September 10 at Mary's Pizza, Piner and Marlow Roads in Santa Rosa at 6:15 p.m.
To sign up, call (707) 577-7151 and leave the information requested on the message, or visit http://www.russianrivercleanup.org.
The RRWCU started 14 years ago as the Russian River Cleanup, a conservation activity of the Sequoia Paddling Club. The first year there were 6 canoes and 12 people who cleaned the river from Alexander Valley to Healdsburg picking up bags of garbage and several tires. In 1999, 80 canoes and 325 people from around the greater Bay area participated in the cleanup. In 1999 the operation was expanded into the tributaries of the Russian River. The RRWCU was able to assist the Monte Rio School in cleaning the lower section of Dutch Bill Creek and assist the Upper Dutch Bill Creek Watershed Stewardship group with supplies. This assistance was also extended to the Fife/Hulbert Creeks group and a fledgling group in the Hobson Creek Watershed. Participation of school students has increased each year. In 2000 students from Healdsburg High School assisted with recycling on Sunday.
