Public Transit
Funding in Jeopardy

The Sierra Club "Challenge to Sprawl Campaign" has asked us to do what we can to convince Congressman Mike Thompson and Senator Barbara Boxer to oppose any changes to the Transportation Equity Act (TEA-3). Both serve on key committees directing this legislation.

TEA-3 proposes to renew federal funding for highway and transit projects for the next 10 years or so. In the past, funds have been allocated on the basis of 4:1 (4 for highways and 1 for rail, buses, etc.) However, a Baucus-Grassley proposal would increase the proportion of funding for highways thus leaving less money for other projects. It could significantly effect funding for transit projects such as the commuter rail project in Sonoma and Marin Counties. Oppose this!

This proposal also weakens the environmental protections required in the current transportation funding program. Oppose this, too!

Contact Rep. Thompson (707/226-9898) and Sen. Boxer (415/403-0100), letting them know you oppose the Baucus-Grassley proposal that would change TEA-3, as soon as possible, as this legislation is being considered now.
