Lake Group Report

Lake Group Chair

Annual Barbecue Held July 13

The Lake Group had it's annual summer Barbecue and Potluck on Tuesday, July 13, in Kelseyville. Our next general meeting will be in September at the Kelseyville High School Library - watch for the Lake Group newsletter for an announcement of the date and speaker.

GMO Ban Proposed by Local Pear Grower

A Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) Ban was proposed to the Lake County Board of Supervisors on April 17, 2004, by local organic pear grower Phil Murphy. Mr. Murphy proposed an ordinance very similar to the one passed as Measure H in Mendocino County in March, however, the supervisors decided to wait for a broader coalition to form and craft an ordinance that would better fit Lake County's needs. The Lake Group has endorsed the proposed ordinance. At this point, an anti-GMO ballot initiative is not planned in Lake County.

Stewardship Group Formed to Protect and Restore Native Fish

The new "CHI Stewardship Council" has been formed to protect and restore the native fish Clear Lake Hitch (Lavinia exilicauda chi). Thanks to the efforts of Peter Windrem, a Lake Group member, the Lake County Water Resources Department has organized this new "CRMP" (Coordinated Resource Management and Planning group). "CHI" is the native American name for the Clear Lake Hitch. On June 24th, a group of people participated in a training session at Kelsey Creek, where they learned how to effectively monitor hitch migrations next spring. See Restoring Clear Lake's Native Hitch.
