What happened to spring? Suddenly the weather went from Winter to Summer. The wildflower bloom was a once in a lifetime event this year. It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my 2nd mentor Ken Thatcher. See the article in this newsletter. His buddy Clark Nattkemper died a few years back. So now my generation is the one responsible to carry the torch. The Lake group has new leaders. Welcome to Lars Crail and Linda Marie. Lars Crail has been a Sierra Club member since about 1977. He got involved in the Sierra Club as a white water kayaker and occasionally kayaks on the Eel River and Cache Creek but mostly does white water rafting with his wife Maile Field and two sons. He hopes to lead some family backpacking trips. By the way, Lars and Maile grow organic pears and wine grapes. Linda Marie has been a member of the Sierra Club since 2001 and is currently on the Lake Group ExCom. She was born in Lakeport and has lived most of her life Lake County. She states that "My love for Lake County runs deep, and it continues to awe and excite me with its diverse beauty and wildlife. I am looking forward to sharing my love and knowledge of this area with others." |
The long season of rain and snow put many work parties on hold. In the Sierra, at least one of the huts had snow up over the roof!! The trails in Sonoma County needed lots of work. The Russian River was flowing at March levels in May. Mother Nature is indeed unpredictable. The very first Sierra Summit is happening Sept. 8-11 in San Francisco. Some of us will be representing the Redwood Chapter. Any member can attend and listen to great guest speakers. There will be 60 workshops. Please try to attend. Enjoy the last of summer. Participate in the California Beach clean-up (Sept 17) on your watershed or at the beach. Interested in leading winter hut trips? Now is the time to hike in to see the huts in the summer and then sign up to be a co-leader in the winter. |
