Outings Chair Report

By Carol Vellutini, Outings Chair

The Parks and Trails committee needs more Sierra Club members to follow the multitude of trail issues in Sonoma County. We have been following: the White Oak Estates proposed development on Sonoma Mountain; the city of Sonoma's proposed upper mountain cemetery development; Sonoma Developmental Center upper orchard issue; Outdoor Recreation Plan; Bodega Harbor trail opportunities; Bay Area Ridge Trail opportunities and many more important trail issues. The bottom line is Sonoma County is losing trial opportunities for many reasons. One is that we need more people to help us. Call me if you are willing to attend meetings and go on field trips.

Our wonderful Redwood Chapter Outings Leaders Retreat is October 22-24 at Jughandle Creek Farm. We have reserved the cozy old farmhouse. Cost is $18 per night. We will try to get a committee to handle the food. All leaders please reserve this weekend. Anyone willing to help with the program call me.

We have had a variety of outings. Thank you to the leaders who have volunteered to take time out of their busy schedules to lead them.

Important: Attend the board of supervisors meeting when they discuss the Sonoma County Outdoor Recreation Plan. This meeting has been frustrating in that it keeps being postponed or changed so I can't give you the exact date even at this writing.

Please call the Sonoma County Regional Parks 527-2041 or log on to the CORP web site www.sonomatrails.org. to get the date. The CORP web site has documents, an analysis of parkland distribution, maps and other pertinent information. If you care about opportunities to go hiking, bicycling, riding or backpacking in Sonoma County, make every effort to go to this meeting. You don't have to speak if you don't want to. Your presence will be appreciated and felt.
