Coastal Cleanup

September 18, 1999

Sonoma County Group members are once again providing leadership and local coordination for the annual statewide Coastal Cleanup day. The Cleanup takes place on Saturday, September 18, 1999, from 9:00 am until noon. A volunteers' barbecue, a sandcastle contest, and a contest to choose the most curious piece of trash discovered will be held at Doran Beach following the cleanup.

Teams of volunteers will comb seashore and watershed areas, collecting debris. The items collected are tabulated by source in an effort to find solutions to keeping our beaches and waterways clean.

Christie Brown of Santa Rosa is spearheading the effort to coordinate volunteers. Beach captains are also being recruited to staff the various pickup locations.

Individuals and organizations that wish to join in the fun can call 1-800-CLEANUP (1-800-253-2687), and leave a message.

Beach captains will meet Tuesday, August 17th at 7:00 pm at the Environmental Center, 632 5th St. Santa Rosa, to learn how to guide the process. If you'd like to become a captain, call the above number.
