Redwood Needles December 2001

From the Outings Chair

By Carol Vellutini, Redwood Chapter Outings Chair

The winter outings will begin with this issue. Please send in reservations as soon as possible so the leaders can finish paperwork. Please remember to have the proper equipment, clothing, and bring a first aid kit. Cotton is not a good choice for winter sports. Have your car in good running condition, carry chains, and buy a snow park pass. Get into shape before the outing begins; endurance, strength, and flexibility are key to getting into shape.

Unless you have experience with cross-country skis in mountaineering snow conditions, it is highly recommended that you experience your first snow outing trip on snowshoes. Rent or borrow a pair of snowshoes. Make sure they are in good condition. Check bindings and straps. Peter Grubb Hut is a good beginner trip.

The Redwood Chapter is proud of its outings program. The leaders and outing chairs met in Mendocino to plan and prepare the next steps to keeping the chapter current on all its responsibilities. All leaders will have a new waiver form in December. Participants are asked to read it before going on outings. Log on to http://www.sierraclub.org/outings/chapter/forms/ or call 415-977-5630. .

Thank you to Carl Inglin who has been editing and typing the outings page for more years than I can remember. Our volunteers put in many hours to provide you with a program. Tell them how much you appreciate it the next time you see them.

If you live in the Gualala area see outings page for meeting to organize leaders. If you live in Ukiah I am looking for a meeting place for March to host a new leaders meeting there. Napa and Solano need a place to host Sierra Singles potlucks once a month.

Hope your holidays are full of love and peace. This has been a stressful time in our lives.
