REDWOOD NEEDLESPresented by the Sierra Club Redwood Chapter Newsletter, The REDWOOD NEEDLES

I would like to see the Napa Sierra Club's membership increased and more involved with each other and other environmental groups in the county. I would also like our group to have more fundraising events to create a sense of community and to fund more community based projects which frame our goals and accomplishments in a positive way. In the past year, I have been involved with a recently formed events group, helping to create annual functions. I have also spearheaded a yearly holiday ornament project whose sales increased last year by 25%. Please vote for me for the ExCom. in Napa County.

I would like the Napa Chapter of the Sierra Club to continue in the protection and preservation of Napa County's diverse natural resources. The Club should take an active role in promoting "green building" so that projects which are constructed whether commercial or residential will have a minimum impact on the environment. The Club should work with other organizations to promote sustainable agriculture so Napa County will continue to be productive agriculturally for centuries and not for the short term.

Researchers recently reported at the meeting of the American Chemical Society in Chicago that catnip oil was ten times more effective than DEET at repelling mosquitoes. It is this type of wonderment and learning from Nature that I find so invigorating. Working within the Sierra Club I found that same kind of mental and spiritual stimulation. I have enjoyed being in the company of quality, educated people, people of vision who are in John Muir's words "warriors" in the best sense. I would be honored to be counted among them. Our many campaigns for the voiceless and lawyer-less wildlife before the courtrooms, the Board of Supervisors, and the public press are both controversial and yet highly effective. Industry may find fault with us but I feel we must continue to be that voice for a safe, sustainable, and preservationist future.
In the next two years I would like to see our group and the Chapter praise companies that develop and use innovative environmental practices. We should continue to be agriculture's watchdog and yet be willing to partner with agriculturists who use earth friendly farming. And we should acknowledge our past heroes among us who in their day created the parks and open spaces we now enjoy, who fought the good fight, and led governments to adopt laws that are beneficial to the environment.
