From the Outings Chair

Carol Vellutini
Chapter Outings Chair

As winter approaches, check out our outings and select a winter trip at your level. We are fortunate to have an introductory snow camping outing offered. You can attend the lecture before the trip even if you don't go. (Lots of great info). Don't like to backpack to your camp? Try the Hutchinson Lodge trips. We offer several. These aren't the right weekend for you? Then call our Claire Tappaan Lodge for reservations. 530-426-3632. You don't have to worry about planning food, the lodge provides everything. It's a wonderful setting, close to several ski areas or go right out the back door for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Or just stay in front of the fire and read. We have four backcountry huts: Peter Grubb at 7800 feet, 3 miles in; Benson 8400 feet, 6 miles in; Ludlow 7400 feet, 7 miles in; and Bradley 7550 feet 5 miles in. I backpack to the huts with snowshoes. It's just like hiking. You are very stable and can go up and down steep mountains. True, for the people who like to speed down the mountain, snowshoes are a drag, but they are trouble free.

The Press Democrat did an article on singles. The photographer went on one of my hikes and took photos. The reporter used a great one of Denese but gave the San Francisco Bay Chapter web site as the contact. Drats!!! Oh well.

We have been working so hard on the Wild Heritage Campaign, trying to save the last wilderness areas of our state and now the doom and gloom of the Republican win. We will have a difficult time trying to pass our legislation. So we will work harder. We will offer trips to wilderness areas in the spring. Meanwhile call up your group chair and volunteer to help.

Each group needs new outing leaders. Call your outings chair for info on training sessions. Happy holidays to you.
