VALCORE Recycling Workday: December 28, 2002 & January 25, 2003. We work from 9 am to Noon. $50 is offered to volunteer supervisors for their favorite classroom. Solano Group earned $2600 last year as a member of VALCORE. Thanks to all for bringing their valuable recyclables to Vallejo.

A big thank you to Nancy McCoy for supervising on both September 28 and November 2 and to her crews: Sabina and Jim Yates, and Debbie Surani. They cut out new curtains for our Donation bins from a spinnaker donated by Doris Klein.

AUDITOR NEEDED. VALCORE is planning an audit. Are there any experts in the Solano Group who could help out or give advice? Call me at 644-9183 or jabogner@juno.com. Thanks.

COASTAL CLEANUP in Solano County. Hundreds of people showed up around the county to cleanup our creeks and streams on Sept. 21. We want to thank you all. Vallejo totals included 290 volunteers picking up 3954 lbs of garbage, 1990 lbs. of steel, 62 tires, and 396 lbs. recycling. Benicia had 720 volunteers removing 9,000 pounds of trash and recyclables. Solano and Yolo County Results were1,268 volunteers, 34,208 lbs. of trash and recyclables. Kudos!

MARE ISLAND TO MEDUSA 10K 5K RACE RECYCLING. The race is over and many pounds of trash were avoided by careful planning. The pre-race training dinner for fifty people netted less than one pound of trash.

The food for the 1500 runners and volunteers (pastries, bagels, apples, oranges, coffee, water) netted less than ten pounds of waste. At the end of the food tables, compost buckets were provided for orange rinds and apple cores along with recycling toters for the PETE water bottles that were provided by Harley Davidson of Vallejo.

VALCORE composted 50 pounds of food waste and the Marine World animals ate 60 pounds of leftover fruits. 50 pounds of cardboard were recycled along with 18 pounds of CRV containers.

TREECYCLE: Bring your Xmas trees to VALCORE for recycling from December 26 to January 12. Nonprofit groups in Vallejo and Benicia will pick up your trees for a small donation. Watch your local papers. Most Solano cities have yardwaste waste programs that will take your trees if you cut them up.

LOCAL MATERIAL EXCHANGE: Log onto www.solanomax.org or www.napamax.org if you have things that are usable and you want to get rid of them. Anything from construction materials to old file cabinets. Also go to www.calmax.org for state-wide listings.

COOKING OIL CAN BE RECYCLED: Vacaville's HHW takes used cooking oil as does Vallejo Garbage every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.. Email solanobreeze@yahoo.com or call 644-9183 for details.

HIKES at Swett/King Ranches in Solano County Dates: Dec 7, Jan 11 and Feb 22

Class M 8 A. Explore these recently optioned (but not yet open to the public) lands. There are no trails and star thistle is very common, so long pants, water, snacks and good boots are recommended. Parts of these lands will soon be part of the Bay Area Ridge Trail and excellent views of bay, marsh, creeks and grasslands abound. We are assured of seeing some wildlife. Each hike will go to another corner of these ranches. Heavy rain cancels. Meet at 9 a.m. at the Park and Ride at the Hiddenbrooke Parkway exit of I-80. We will carpool to the trailhead. Info/Reservation: 707-864-2108 or keva@castles.com.
