Impact of Wood Smoke

Len Swenson
Sonoma Political Co-Chair

In order to reduce the impact of wood smoke from non-certified wood burning appliances and fireplaces on the health of Santa Rosa residents, an ordinance was passed recently. This ordinance applies to all new homes and existing ones when resold. It also mandates that after June 1, 2004, old model freestanding wood stoves are illegal. Santa Rosa is also initiating a "Don't Light Tonight" program to be broadcast when the inversion layer is a problem.

This is great progress toward cleaner air. Letters of appreciation to Santa Rosa officials are needed. Request also that Santa Rosa buses and garbage trucks should only be of the type that uses natural gas for fuel. Encourage other cities and Sonoma County to follow suit.
