Eel River Update
Friends of the Eel River's opening brief in their lawsuit
to stop the Sonoma County Water Agency's faulty EIR for
their Water Source and Transmission Project and the lock
down of Eel River Water was filed on October 18, 1999 in
Sonoma County Superior Court. The brief has been posted to
the FOER website, www.eelriver.org. Check it out.
"The 'Water Project'. . .challenged in this suit, would
have two profound impacts. First it would dramatically
increase existing diversions of water from the Russian River
for consumptive uses throughout Sonoma and Northern Marin
Counties, unleashing a tidal wave of urban growth throughout
the region. Second, it would consume for urban growth the
only surface water remaining in Sonoma County that could be
used to replace the 181,000 acre-feet of water now diverted
annually from the Eel River. . .Once this potential
replacement water is committed to urban growth, restoration
of the Eel River's natural flows and recovery of its fishery
would be virtually impossible."
The trial date will likely be set for some time in
January 2000. Redwood Chapter and Sonoma Group have
contributed funds to this important lawsuit. FOER needs
additional financial support for the suit. Please contribute
if you can.
