Call for Political Committee Volunteers
It's That Season Again--no--not the Holiday Season-the
POLITICAL Season
The political season, as with the holiday season, seems
to come upon us earlier every year. That's especially true
this year in California with the new March primary. The
first of our Club endorsements appear in this issue of the
Needles and more will follow.
As the new year proceeds there will be many opportunities
for interested Club members to get involved with political
activity. This may not sound as enticing as going on a Club
outing, but it can be fun (really!). Political committee
volunteers draw up candidate questionnaires, participate in
candidate interviews, campaign for endorsed candidates or
ballot measure positions, contact other Club members to help
out with campaigns, and keep a watchful eye on elected
officials and policy that may impact the environment.
In Sonoma County it's very likely that there will be at
least one land use ballot initiative that will require a
grassroots signature gathering drive. Sierra Club will be
involved, and to be successful we will need our members'
help.
Political involvement through supporting
pro-environmental candidates and ballot measures is one of
our most effective ways of advancing a pro-active,
environmental agenda.
You don't have to be an expert to make a contribution to
this important Sierra Club work. If this sounds interesting
(even just a little), please contact Margaret Pennington,
Sonoma Group and Redwood Chapter Political Chair, 829-2294,
penningt@sonic.net.
