Congratulations to Maria Comas and Linda Souza for training to be North Group hike leaders. Ms. Comas is a high school Spanish teacher and long-time resident of Humboldt County. She is an active gardener and backpacker and spends a lot of time in the local Marble and Trinity mountains. She will lead her first outings on March 26 in Prairie Creek State Park. Ms. Souza has been living and loving life in the Humboldt area for about 3 years, formerly from the Bay Area. She works with the Eureka High School students as an AmeriCorps CHOICE coach. Hobbies include mycology, mosaic/collage, dance, swimming, rafting, some backpacking, plus any outdoor activity. She has experience guiding children, exploring nature through walks and various outdoor activities. Come meet Linda on her first outing on February 26 in Redwood National Park. Sequoia Paddler Isabelle Saint-Guily will now be leading hikes for the Napa Group. Welcome Isabelle to your new role. Redwood Chapter had the first winter outing to Peter Grubb Hut high in the Sierra at 7800 feet. We had many beginners and they did great. The weather changed after a week of minus 4 degrees at night and two days of rain and high winds to a nice warm sunny day on the hike in. We had the last of the calm weather before the big series of storms. Barbara from Rohnert Park drove all the way to Reno to pick up her friend Heiko from the airport. He flew up from |
LA to ski into Peter Grubb!! Barbara will be moving to LA and wanted to do one last trip to the Sierra. Mike, Kate, Lars, Don, Chuck, Bob, and Elizabeth thank you for a great trip. Peggy, a skilled backpacker from the Loma Prieta Chapter, drove up to meet us. She liked our program and will join us on other hut trips. Lars brought his family. They stayed at Clair Tappaan while he skied in. I am hoping Lars will lead family trips. He has a fun, positive, outdoor oriented family. He is a team player. On a different note, at this writing, my most experienced winter camping leader is in the hospital at Truckee with a fractured femur. He was skiing at Sugar Bowl and misjudged a flat area. He went about 15 feet in the air with his hip hitting a rocky cliff and then landed in deep powder. His friend found him and he was brought out by rescue team. Jim is highly trained in avalanche rescue and in winter mountaineering so he was on the other side of things. Needles to say we are limping by with the rest of the season's winter trips. Speedy recovery Jim!! Be safe this winter. Learn to read the weather and don't take unnecessary chances. |
