Help Needed - Get Involved Locally

Solano Group has teamed up with several local movements to preserve and protect areas from development. Please get out and help these groups in your hometown.

  • Benicia - Protect Our Waterfront
In November, 2004, the Benicia City Council adopted the initiative to re-zone the waterfront from "commercial" to "waterfront park." We will not, therefore, have to put it on the ballot in March. Their decision was based on the two advisory measures on November 2nd. The Council's limited development measure (Measure B) was defeated and the park initiative measure (Measure C) passed by the highest margin in Benicia history, almost 70%. So thank you to the Sierra Club for your efforts! Susan Street, Chair Protect Our Waterfront, 747-1930, 745-5477 or bstreet@pacbell.net.
  • Fairfield/ Suisun City
Potrero Hills Landfill is planning an expansion. They are located just past Lawler Ranch on Highway 12 which is also just south of Travis Air Force base and 2 miles from a 8500-acre Wildlife Preserve. We are watching it with Yoshida and Dwight. The EIR should be out soon. Contact Citizens Against the Dump Expansion to sign the petition limiting expansion. INFO www.aceconservator.com or antar5@sbcglobal.net or 644-9183
  • Vacaville
Vacaville Friends of Lagoon Valley, Marian Conning, 447-7356.
  • Vallejo - Vallejo Waterfront Coalition
Celebrate Vallejo's historic waterfront and support its sustainable development by attending the "Romancing the Waterfront" Valentine's Ball fund raiser on Saturday, February 12, 2005 at 7:00 PM. It will be a fun-filled evening of music, dancing, appetizers, no-host bar, silent auction, raffle and prizes! This event is being held at the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum in the Old City Hall building at 734 Marin Street in Vallejo. Your generous donation of $25 per person will help the Vallejo Waterfront Coalition save Vallejo's historic waterfront. For more information, contact the Coalition at (707) 645-3186 or info@VallejoWaterfrontCoalition.org.
  • Solano County

Wanted: VALCORE Board Replacement

Solano Group has been a member of VALCORE Recycling since 1985. Jane Bogner has been our representative off and on since 1988. Guess what, she needs a break.

Obligations for a board member include attending the monthly board meeting on the 4th Monday of each month at 6:30 in Vallejo and arranging volunteers for the 8 Saturday workdays at the recycling site. The list of regular volunteers is readily available. VALCORE has been our source of money needed to run our local group. It's an exciting board and a great way to 'act locally' on a global issue.
