Let’s Go Rafting and help save the Eel River

By Margaret Pennington

Redwood Chapter Outings invites you to join our First Annual Eel River “Activist” Rafting trip. Come enjoy the beauty of the “Wild and Scenic” Eel River canyon and the fun of a rafting adventure while at the same time learning about conservation issues facing the river that flows through the heart of the Redwood Chapter.

We will raft 46 miles in four days on the Main Eel from Dos Rios to Alder Point. This portion of the Eel offers rugged scenery, sandy beaches (great campsites), a sprinkling of good Class III rapids, and opportunities for enjoyable side hikes.

Accompanied by an informed Eel River conservationist, we will also explore the environmental threats to the watershed&emdash;primarily the environmental disaster known as the Potter Valley Hydroelectric Project which diverts 25% to 90% of the Eel’s natural flow into the Russian River to the detriment of both river systems. We will also learn about current efforts to restore the Eel River to a natural state of health and how we can help.

The trip is planned for Friday to Monday in late April or early May. Weather, rain and water levels will determine the exact date. A commercial rafting company will guide the trip and provide the rafts. Mild whitewater makes this an excellent trip for both novice and more advanced paddlers. No previous paddle boat experience is necessary. Approximate price for the four day trip including all meals is $350.
