Sierra Nevada Forest Protection Comes To Napa

Tom Davis, Chair, Napa Group

The Napa group is sponsoring a slide show and presentation of the Sierra Nevada Forest Protection Campaign on February 19, 1999 at 7:00 pm at the Napa Environmental Center, 68 Coombs Street, Napa. The presentation is open to the public and is free of charge.

The Sierra Nevada Forest Protection Campaign is a coalition of conserv-ation organizations, individual activists, scientists and spiritual leaders fighting for the protection of the ancient forests, wild lands and wild rivers of the Sierra Nevada. The Bay, Mother Lode, Tehipite and Toiyabe Chapters of the Sierra Club are members of the coalition.

The discussion leader will be Bob Brister, outreach coordinator of the Sierra Nevada Forest Protection Campaign and an environmental activist from Oakhurst, California. According to Brister, the Sierra Nevada range as we know it is in trouble. Only 13% of the original forest remains. The U.S. Forest Service, which is responsible for most of the Sierra Nevada lands, has proposed to increase logging by 43% and build 1,200 miles of new logging roads. This mismanagement of the range needs to be stopped if California’s treasured resource is to survive.

The Sierra Nevada Forest Protection Campaign is working to (1) stop the worst timber sales, (2) prevent legislation that would allow destruction of wild places, (3) educate the public on the importance and the beauty of the Sierra Nevada range and (4) identify critical lands within national forests that can be permanently protected. Brister’s presentation will let us know what needs to be done and how we can help. For more information, call Tom Davis at 707-226-9554 or email tom@napavalleycpas.com.
