Help Needed - Get Involved Locally

Solano Group has teamed up with several local movements to preserve and protect areas from development. Call or email for opportunities.

Solano County Fairgrounds considering Mills Project

Solano Group is questioning the potential use of public lands for a shopping center disguised as a year-round useful County Fair venue. Thanks for those of you who returned the postcard from our recent mailing. We have counted over 200 of you (as of May 5) who want your voices heard in opposition to this project. Jim DeKloe

Solano County

The Solano Land Trust (SLT) is working on the Calhoun Cut/Lindsey Slough Restoration Plan. Calhoun Cut was built in 1913 as part of an urban development scheme that never really got off the ground. Today, the historic channel of Lindsey Slough is still largely intact, as it curves and winds outside of the arrow-straight, levee-bound channel of Calhoun Cut. In the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, where water diversions, levees, and intensifying land use have dramatically reduced the range of natural marshlands, Lindsey Slough presents a rare opportunity to restore natural a waterway.

On Tuesday, June 6, 2006 Solano Land Trust will hold the 2nd public meeting to discuss plans for restoring Lindsey Slough on the Calhoun Cut Ecological Reserve (CCER). Local farmers, ranchers, agencies, and any other interested stakeholders are invited to attend. This property is adjacent to SLT's Jepson Prairie Preserve on land owned by the California Department of Fish and Game. For more information contact Ben Wallace at 707-432-0150 x203 or ben@solanolandtrust.org.

Earth Day 2006 - April 22

Many Thanks to all our volunteers who worked all over the county on this day.

  • Vallejo - Diji Christian, Christine Lundgren, and Ray Anderson who helped me staff the Sierra Club Table and Kim from Vallejo Waterfront Coalition who leant us a canopy.
  • Fairfield - Brad and Ann Smith receive our gratitude for staffing the Sierra Club table in the shadow of the new Solano County government building.
  • Thanks also to Phil McCullough, Kathy Blume, and Sam McGee who handed out flyers to over 600 cars during the County-wide E-Waste Event at the Westfield Mall parking lot.

Wanted: VALCORE Board Replacement

Solano Group has been a member of VALCORE Recycling since 1985. Jane Bogner has been our representative off and on since 1988. Guess what, she needs a break.

Obligations for a board member include attending the monthly board meeting on the 4th Monday of each month at 6:30 in Vallejo and arranging volunteers for the 8 Saturday workdays at the recycling site. It's an exciting board and a great way to 'act locally' on a global issue.
