Lake Group Report

The Lake Group, as our first conservation project, has been working on supporting the expansion of the Snow Mountain Wilderness Area. This special landmark in our county, with spectacular views and a diversity of vegetation, is popular with hikers, backpackers, hunters and horsemen. A letter writing campaign is underway to demonstrate our support of this expansion to Representative Mike Thompson.

Our summer outings were successful and varied: a kayak trip down Cache Creek, a bike ride over the Old Toll Road to Hopland, and an easy kayak trip along the shores of Clear Lake. Some of our upcoming fall outings include a hike up the Glen Eden Trail (Oct. 30), which was part of an old Indian trail that led to the Ukiah Valley and the coast, and a Cache Creek Ridge hike (October 27) that will take us to the intersection of Bear Creek and Cache Creek. We'll explore some of the potential Cache Creek Wilderness.

Our September general membership meeting featured a slide show on the Patagonia area by Pete McGee, who has worked in both Chile and Argentina. His presentation highlighted the natural and cultural resources of that remote region. The next membership meeting will be on Wednesday, November 28th, at Kelseyville High School's library at 7 pm. We will be treated to a special multi-media slide show on the spectacular Death Valley area by Win and Sue Stiles, both of whom have traveled extensively and are professional photographers. We appreciate the time and effort that Pete, Sue and Win have put into sharing their experiences with us so that we can explore and enjoy, from afar, some of the wild places of the earth.
