Chapter Chair Report Margaret Pennington | |
|
I'd like to focus on two items in the Chapter Chair Report. First, please take note of the Call for Nominations for Group and Chapter Executive Committee members. Please consider stepping up and running for a seat on your Group or the Chapter Executive Committee. If you haven't been actively involved with the local Sierra Club, you may think this doesn't sound like an "entry level" position. Actually, serving on an ExCom can be a very good starting point for getting involved. You learn (quickly) about the environmental issues facing your region and have the opportunity to match your skills with the challenges at hand whether commenting on an EIR or helping to organize a new member meeting. Probably the most important traits an ExCom member can have are these: concern for the well-being of the natural environment and a deep and abiding desire to help protect it. If that sounds like you (if you're a Sierra Club member it probably does) then I hope you'll consider taking a turn at serving on a local Executive Committee. Second, thanks to all our members who have contributed to our Chapter 2002 fund drive. Donations are down significantly this year from last perhaps due to economic uncertainties. I hope you'll please consider sending a donation now. I probably sound like a broken record with this one BUT if everyone who has not sent in a 2002 donation thus |
far were to send JUST $1, we'd make our goal of raising $20,000. This would allow us to pay off our legal bills associated with litigation to halt the dewatering of the Navarro and other North Coast rivers and to move ahead to defend against inappropriate vineyard conversions and ill-advised schemes to export water from north coast rivers and to work for forest protection and wilderness expansion. Of course, EVERYONE won't send that $1 so if YOU could send just $5 or $10 as a pledge of support for the work your local Sierra Club is doing we'd make our goal and your local volunteers would be ever so appreciative. Thank you. P.S. Our 2002 fund appeal letter included a reply card that asked: Would you like to be added to our local email alerts list? Would you like to get more involved with your local Group? About 10% of the replies came back with those boxes checked. If you'd like to "check either of those boxes" now, please send an email to Melanie Matway ad_astra7@hotmail.com. |
