Lake Group Report

Nina Marino
Lake Group Chair

The grading ordinance is finally about to undergo revisions and we will be recommending people to serve on a committee appointed by the Board of Supervisors that will take on this task. The ordinance regulates land clearing and defines which activities are exempt from its rules, one of which is on-going agricultural activities. Exactly what constitutes on going agricultural use has been the subject of much concern and will need to be clarified by the committee.

We continue to collect signatures on a petition to send to Senator Feinstein urging her support for the California Wild Heritage Wilderness Act of 2002. We also support Cache Creek Wilderness and Wild and Scenic Status, which could prevent the building of more dams on the creek. Yolo Water Conservation

and Flood Control District has applied for 95,000 acre feet of winter flow but their application can't be approved until they have adequate storage for the water. They had proposed to use old gravel pits but their alternative storage option is a dam on Cache Creek in the Blue Ridge area. Wild and Scenic Status for the creek would stop this alternative, thereby preventing Yolo Ditch from obtaining further allocation of our water.

Our next meeting should be on Nov. 20, 7 pm at the Kelseyville High School Library. We hope to feature a speaker on sustainable vineyard development. If available, Julianne Lock, author of "Vineyards in the Watershed" will speak on this issue which is of great importance to our county.
