UGB's Throughout Sonoma County

The Sonoma Group has endorsed all five Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) related ballot measures that will appear on Sonoma County ballots this November. Santa Rosa's Measure G, Sebastopol's Measure O, Healdsburg's Measure 1, Rohnert Park's Measure N, and Sonoma County's Measure D have all gained the Sierra Club seal of approval, and members and friends are urged to vote for the UGB-related ballot measure on your own ballot.

Voter-approved Urban Growth Boundaries are critical to Sonoma County's future because they stop urban sprawl and protect the farmland and open space that help make Sonoma County such a wonderful place to live.

Measure D, Sonoma County, will prevent urbanization in specially designated Community Separators that adjoin cities whose voters approve 20-year UGBS. Remember to vote for this countywide measure in addition to your city's UGB measure.

Santa Rosa's Measure G will lock in a 20-year Urban Growth Boundary around Santa Rosa. Measure G requires that most changes to the UGB be approved by a majority vote of the people; currently, the UGB can be changed up to four times a year by only three votes of the City Council.

Sebastopol's Measure O establishes a 20-year Urban Growth Boundary around Sebastopol which requires voter approval to expand. Similarly, Healdsburg voters will have the opportunity to vote on Measure 1.

Rohnert Park's Measure N, will provide a unique 4-year Urban Growth Boundary that requires voter approval of any boundary expansions until the City's next General Plan update in the year 2000. Measure N gives Rohnert Park four years to carefully plan for future growth, and perhaps to plan for a 20-year UGB that will go on the ballot in the year 2000.

All of the UGB Campaigns need volunteers to help with mailings, do precinct walking, and make phone calls. To get involved contact Christa Shaw, North Bay Field Representative of Greenbelt Alliance, at 575-3661.
