Thirty hikers, a dozen goats, and three members of the Frey family gathered in front of the tasting room of the Frey Winery on a misty autumn morning.

Daniel and Katrina Frey talked about the conservation easement on the ranch. The conservation easement protects 400 acres including several stands of the most easterly Coast Redwoods in California, thanks to micro-climates of ocean fog.

Since its start in the 1960s, the Ranch has expanded from 100 acres to over 1000. The Frey family started the first organic vineyard in the US and continues to use biodynamic farming, the goats being part of the process.

Daniel Frey led us through wide meadows circled by stands of 2nd growth redwoods, and up a western slope through madrones, and oak with fall foliage. We finished our two hour hike at the tasting room, with generous tastes of Frey Wine.

Evan Johnson took several photos, my favorite being that of Kyle, my grandson, with bear scat in hand.
