7:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Class M5A. This educational outing is broader in scope than the previous two. We will explore an historic homestead and a mountain vineyard in the headwaters of a creek. This property has been used by man for 160 years. For the last 20 years there has been a vineyard. We will be guided by experts in grape farming and in teaching conservation principles to children. We will hike through the vineyard and ranch property to a high vantage point with terrific views. There we will eat lunch and discuss a number of topics including the history of this property, it's current uses, how human use impacts the land and its animal population (including fish), issues surrounding hillside farming and even the notions of private land ownership versus the public's interest in the sustainability of nature. Following the hike you may wish to accept our host's invitation to get a brief overview of grape harvest, see the winery and taste their wines. Reservations are required.
