Explore, enjoy and protect the planet

Our vision for Lake Berryessa, shared by many conservation and recreation organizations, is of a vacation area where a family can stay for a week in a cabin or campground, enjoying a diversity of activities such as swimming, kayaking, hiking, nature walks, picnicking, birding, boating, fishing, bicycling, visiting the Nature Center, learning about local flora and fauna, etc.

Basically a recreation area that will instill in visitors an appreciation of nature and and conservation values by providing different learning opportunities and ways to actively enjoy the outdoors in a manner that promotes health for both people and the environment.

Shoreline Trail: The government has proposed a 150 shoreline trail all the way around the lake. This will open up over 100 miles of shoreline which has been inaccessible by land.

A Shoreline Trail will also facilitate all sorts of nature-oreiented recreation, including hiking, biking, picnicking and swimming in quiet coves, bird-watching, and any form of nature study.

PLUS, WE PROPOSE:

A Companion Water Trail:Water trails are a fairly new idea. A water trail at the Lake would allow one to circumnavigate the lake in a canoe or kayak by developing launch ramps and remote campsites around the shoreline. A water trail is also proposed for the San Francisco Bay.

Electric Ferry and Electric Rental Boats: An electric ferry would allow a family to rent a cabin for a week and visit other areas of the lake without using their car.

Small electric boats would be ideal for those who want to spend a quiet day on the lake or exploring the shoreline. Having only electric boats for rent would make the lake quieter, cleaner, and safer.

AND:

In addition to enhancing the proposals with more public management and quiet zones, we support many elements that are included in the government's alternatives, including:

  • Exclusive trailer sites to be replaced with cabins for the public
  • Compliance with current codes and regulations (the resorts are not in compliance now)
  • Rehabilitation of lakeshore and riparian habitat
  • Increase public access to the lakeshore and enhance short-term use opportunities
  • Sustainable design, environmentally sensitive practices, an eco-tourist approach to facility development and operation
  • No permanent structures within the floodplain
  • Thematic architectural design of all facilities, taking into account the physical and cultural heritage of the area
  • All development to be within the current developed footprint
  • No entrance fees charged at resorts
  • Change of resort names
  • Protected wildlife zone
